High blood sugar & prediabetes
India has one of the largest numbers of people with diabetes in the world, and many more with prediabetes who don't know it yet.
What it is
Prediabetes means blood sugar is higher than normal but not yet in the diabetes range. It often has no symptoms. Without changes, many people move on to type 2 diabetes, which affects the heart, kidneys, eyes and nerves.
Common city-life contributors
- Large portions of white rice, maida and sweets
- Sugary tea, juices and soft drinks
- Fried snacks and frequent eating out
- Long hours of sitting
- Weight around the waist
- Stress and poor sleep
Everyday habits that help
- Build plates around vegetables, dal and protein, with a smaller portion of rice or roti
- Choose whole-grain atta, millets (bajra, jowar, ragi) and brown or red rice more often
- Cut added sugar, especially in drinks
- Walk for 10 to 15 minutes after meals
- Get an HbA1c or fasting sugar test once a year if you are over 30 or have a family history
Where clean ingredients fit in
Millet atta, whole dals and whole-grain rice are traditional Indian foods that fit well into a blood-sugar-friendly plate. They are not a treatment, and portion size still matters.
When to see a doctor
- Increased thirst, frequent urination, tiredness or slow-healing wounds
- Family history of diabetes, or diabetes in pregnancy in the past
- Any fasting sugar or HbA1c result above normal
