High cholesterol & heart health
High cholesterol has no symptoms, which is why so many people in their thirties are surprised by their first lipid test.
What it is
Cholesterol is a fat in the blood. High LDL ('bad') cholesterol and triglycerides, and low HDL ('good') cholesterol, raise the risk of heart attack and stroke over time. Genes play a part, but so do diet, weight and activity.
Common city-life contributors
- Trans fats from vanaspati and repeatedly reheated frying oil
- Fried snacks, bakery items and fast food
- Refined carbohydrates and sugar, which push up triglycerides
- Smoking and little exercise
- Weight gain around the waist
Everyday habits that help
- Avoid vanaspati and reheated oil; use a small amount of fresh oil, and rotate oils
- Eat more fibre: whole dals, rajma, chana, oats, millets, vegetables and fruit
- Choose a handful of unsalted nuts over fried snacks
- Limit sweets, maida and sugary drinks
- Stay active and stop smoking
- Get a lipid profile done, especially if heart disease runs in the family
Where clean ingredients fit in
Swapping refined and reused oil for fresh, cold-pressed oil, and maida for whole grains and dals, are simple kitchen changes that support a heart-healthy diet. Oil is still oil, though: use it sparingly.
When to see a doctor
- You are over 30 and have never had a lipid test
- Family history of early heart disease
- Chest pain, breathlessness or pain spreading to the arm or jaw: call emergency services
