High blood pressure & salt
Most Indians eat far more salt than the recommended limit, much of it hidden in packaged snacks, pickles and restaurant food.
What it is
High blood pressure (hypertension) means the force of blood against artery walls stays too high. It usually has no symptoms, but over years it damages the heart, brain and kidneys. The WHO recommends less than 5 g of salt a day for adults, about one teaspoon.
Common city-life contributors
- Packaged namkeen, chips, instant noodles and ready meals
- Restaurant and street food
- Pickles, papad and sauces every day
- Stress, little sleep and little exercise
- Weight gain and alcohol
Everyday habits that help
- Use spices, amchur, lemon and herbs to add flavour so you need less salt
- Taste before adding salt at the table
- Cut down on packaged snacks, papad and pickles
- Eat more vegetables, fruit, dals and curd
- Stay active, sleep well and manage stress
- Check your blood pressure at least once a year
Where clean ingredients fit in
Well-made spices give food so much flavour that you need less salt. Our low-sodium chaat masala and no-MSG blends are made with this in mind. They are still seasonings, so use them sensibly.
